Gratitude, you've heard about it, you've rolled your eyes about
it- but here we are. Gratitude is more than just saying "yeah,
yeah, yeah, I'm grateful" for this that or the other thing.
Gratitude is actually a constant state of mind. It matters (and it
makes a difference) because it forces you to pause for a second and
pay attention to all of the things you DO have instead of always
focusing on what you don't have, where you're trying to go, and
what else needs to be done.
Gratitude also comes with a large perspective shift. For me,
sometimes I get all ho-hum because I don't live in the home of my
dreams. Focusing on what I don't yet have causes me to be
completely ungrateful for all that I do currently have. And guess
what this "not-yet-dream-home" DOES afford me? A roof over my head,
a warm, cozy bed each night, a stocked refrigerator, running water,
a place for my dogs to run, play, and snuggle- and that's just the
beginning.
Whatever we focus on grows. So, ultimately you get to decide each
day- what reality do you want to expand in your life? The good
stuff? Or the not-so-good stuff? A true gratitude practice will
help you focus your energy on all that your current life (no matter
what you're going through or how you feel about it) affords
you.
